Radicalising the Local in Amsterdam
It felt like a mad trip to go all the way to Amsterdam to see a lecture at the Academy of Architecture, but in my opinion well worth it. Travelling with Kerry and William I had the chance to be involved in some very thoughtful discussions with two very committed artist who's practice focusses on social engagement. The trip really built my confidence in terms of someone who rarely travels who had to take control of navigation in the misty streets of Amsterdam. The Rick Lowe lecture was very thought provoking and it was particularly interesting to see a process last for 17 years, sustainable and embedded and with private not public sector investment, below are some of the key messages I took form Rick Lowe's presentation.
- We should think about resources and not just money for projects, what skills exist within our communities
- Artists created a life which allowed people to imagine what life can be, not what life they have been told they should have
- Connect young people to artists doing interesting things
- Small festivals and events within the community to break the isolation
- Questioning how we listen to communities, Rick found he spent more time listening that suggesting.
Even having a lecture at 8 PM was valuable with a drink after and one to one conversations, would this work in Pennine Lancashire? We all managed to have a conversation with someone we didn't know and Rick was quite humbled by the fact we had travelled from England to see him speak. We also bumped into students from Sheffield with their tutor Carolynne Butterworth who have worked in Pennine Lancashire, so a British invasion. We have the opportunity to take young people to Huston to stay with the families in project row houses and of course we may have to go, what a shame!
We have already planned our first meeting to get things going and hopefully this will be an interesting journey.
